November 30, 2009 - BSC Celebrates Park Groundbreaking

Raleigh -- With shovels in-hand, Mayor Meeker and David Welch broke ground on the Blount Street Commons neighborhood park today. Located in the heart of downtown Raleigh, the soon to be 27,660 sq. foot park is the development's newest renovation to one of RaleighR's most historic streets.

Developed by LNR Blount St. LLC, Blount Street Commons is a mix of historic homes, live-work condominiums, Carriage Homes and Row Homes. The park will serve as the focal point for the neighborhood with manicured lawns, sculpted gardens and benches for seating.

"Our continued maturation of a city is best exemplified by our commitment to green and open spaces," said Meeker.

"Parks provide a great place for the community to gather, children to play and neighbors to get to know each other. The Blount Street Commons Neighborhood Park will give residents a park in their back yard while still surrounded by all the trappings a busy downtown offers," commented LNR Regional President David Welch. "A neighborhood feel with enjoyable outdoor spaces is truly ideal while also placing residents within walking distance of their jobs, restaurants and shops."

Wake County saw an 18 percent increase in the number of homes sold last month compared to the previous year and Blount Street Commons is no exception. "We sold the historic Bailey-G," continued Welch, who is pleased to see that Blount Street Commons is spear-heading Raleigh's rebounding home sales. Local residential sales are expected to continue to increase over the next three months.

Welch also announced the historic Merrimon-Wynne home will take part in Oakwood's Candlelight Tour, set for December 12-13. First built in 1875 and home to some of North Carolina's most prominent citizens, the house was moved in August 2008 from 526 N. Wilmington St. to 500 N. Blount St.
